I’m currently going through a personal wardrobe audit because it’s the new year, and I’m craving a personal style shift. I’m also suffering from “I hate all of my clothes right now” syndrome. Self diagnosed, of course. Whether you’re casual about clothes, or at extreme levels, the feeling of having nothing to wear is something that everybody experiences. The real test however, is how you get yourself out of this mindset.

If you’re having your own mental block about what to wear, or how to continue to evolve your personal style, then I have a few tips that you can try yourself.

One way to achieve a style shift that ultimately gets you out of the mindset that you have nothing to wear is by trading in your daily items that you’ve overworn with new styles in the same category.

Because shifting your entire wardrobe in one go is absolutely unrealistic, a good way to start a task like this is by focusing on one specific item in your wardrobe and seeing how you can elevate it beyond what you already have. I like to call this the 1 degree method.

Take an item that you’ve worn to death and replace it with something slightly different in style. Think of it this way; you’re steering a ship and you change the course of where you’re going by only 1 degree. Over time, that 1 degree shift will make you go in a completely new direction. This same theory can be applied to your personal wardrobe and how you can naturally shift your personal style with time by slightly adjusting what you already wear.

Switch up a daily garment you’re bored with not by getting something completely different, but by getting more or less the same item but in an updated style. Think smaller changes now that will yield bigger results later.

For today’s newsletter we’re going to apply this 1 degree method to hoodies. It’s the dead of winter, so I’m wearing them a lot as of late. It’s an item that I’m looking to upgrade. While I have a lot of options to pick from, I’m craving for something different that doesn’t look like the rest of what I already own.

I don’t want to completely abandon wearing them because they are comfortable and do the trick of keeping me warm, so I’m looking at ways I can slightly change it up without doing a complete 180. Plus, hoodies is one of those items that’s worn by everyone, so having one that looks slightly different is a great way to not only refresh a daily classic, but also avoid dressing like everybody else—because let’s be real, nobody wants to get mogged by someone wearing the exact same thing as you.

Hoodies are one of those items that I feel have reached their innovative peak because the garment has been perfected. Sure, there are brands that are experimenting with different materials and slightly altered fits, but more or less, the garment has remained the same for decades.

There is one style in particular that’s been around for 100 years that is starting to get a little bit more attention on the streets again. This style of hoodie didn’t have a long lifespan but it played a crucial role in creating the modern hoodie we all know and love today.
